BBPS

Bharat Bill Payment System is the NPCI-operated rail that puts every participating biller behind a single interface, with a standard bill fetch, a standard receipt and a standard complaint process. The counter fetches the live bill from the biller, takes payment against it, and hands over a BBPS reference that the biller itself recognises.

What you get

  • Electricity, water, piped and cylinder gas, broadband, landline, LPG and more
  • Live bill fetch: the amount comes from the biller, not from the customer
  • Standard BBPS reference on every receipt, honoured by the biller
  • Formal complaint route through the BBPS dispute process
  • Customer alerted by SMS on payment confirmation
  • Commission per bill credited to the operator wallet

How it works

  1. 1Pick the billerChoose the category and the biller. The form then asks only for what that biller needs, such as a consumer number or a service ID.
  2. 2Fetch the billThe live amount, due date and consumer name come back from the biller. The operator reads the name back before taking cash.
  3. 3Take payment and submitPayment is made against the fetched bill, so the amount cannot drift from what the biller is actually owed.
  4. 4Issue the BBPS receiptThe receipt carries the BBPS transaction reference. That reference is what the biller and the dispute process both work from.

FAQ

About bbps

Why fetch the bill instead of letting the customer state the amount?

Because a stated amount is a guess. A part payment against a biller that does not accept part payments is rejected after the cash is taken, and an overpayment sits as biller credit rather than coming back. Fetching first means the amount paid is the amount the biller is owed.

The payment succeeded but the biller still shows the bill as due.

Biller systems update on their own cycle, so a short lag is normal rather than a failure. If it persists, the BBPS reference on the receipt is raised through the BBPS complaint process, which the biller is obliged to answer. Do not pay a second time against the same bill while a complaint is open.
